*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
#Lancashire
Calf Hey Reservoir, set in the Rossendale hills of Lancashire, typically holds cool water year-round. Seasonal surface temperatures commonly range from about 2–6 °C (36–43 °F) in winter, 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) in spring and autumn, and perhaps 12–20 °C (54–68 °F) on warmer summer days; deeper water remains colder. These figures vary with weather, recent rainfall and how long sunny spells persist, so even summer dips can feel bracing compared with coastal bathing.
Swimming at Calf Hey is not officially promoted; the reservoir and surrounding impoundments are usually managed by a water company or local authority and open-water bathing is discouraged because of safety risks, water quality concerns and hidden hazards such as steep sides and underwater obstacles. Despite this, some experienced wild swimmers may use the site at their own risk, taking precautions against cold-water shock. The area is nevertheless popular for walking, birdwatching and cycling, with attractive Rossendale countryside, woodlands and nearby towns such as Rawtenstall offering cafes, nature reserves and trail access.
