Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Wilson Lake, one of the larger reservoirs on the Tennessee River in northern Alabama, exhibits a typical temperate climate water temperature range. During the peak summer months, from late June through August, surface water temperatures warm considerably, making swimming comfortable. Temperatures often climb into the 27∘C to 32∘C (80∘F to 90∘F) range. Conversely, in the winter months, particularly January and February, the water cools significantly, dropping to an average of 4∘C to 11∘C (40∘F to 52∘F), which is too cold for casual recreation and primarily attracts dedicated anglers.
Swimming is generally permitted in Wilson Lake, as the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) manages the reservoir for multiple public uses including recreation. There is no overall ban on swimming, and the area is widely used for boating and water sports. However, swimmers should exercise extreme caution and are usually advised to swim at their own risk, as there are typically no official lifeguarded areas. The lake is a major shipping channel and is subject to strong currents near the Wilson Dam and lock system, which pose significant safety hazards.
