*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Sugar Lake in Minnesota typically follows the seasonal pattern of many northern lakes, with cold, near-freezing conditions in late winter and much warmer surface temperatures in summer. In early spring the water often ranges from about 35–55°F (2–13°C) as ice melts and warming begins. By late spring and early summer surface temperatures commonly climb to roughly 60–70°F (16–21°C), and midsummer surface readings often sit between 68–75°F (20–24°C), occasionally reaching the upper 70s or near 80°F (about 26–27°C) in shallow, sheltered bays on hot days. In autumn the surface cools back through the 50s to low 40s °F (10–5°C), and when the lake is ice-covered in winter the water just under the ice is close to 32–39°F (0–4°C). Deeper water remains colder year-round and can be significantly cooler than surface temperatures during stratified months.
Swimming is generally allowed at Sugar Lake during ice-free months where public access, beaches or private shorelines permit it, because the lake provides suitable open water for recreation. Local rules, water-quality advisories, safety concerns such as boat traffic, and the absence of lifeguards may restrict or discourage swimming at times, and winter or thin-ice conditions make swimming hazardous. It’s advisable to check current local advisories before entering the water.
