*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Squirrel Lake in northern Wisconsin typically follows the seasonal pattern of small, clear glacial lakes in the region. Surface temperatures in spring often range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as snowmelt and cool air keep the water chilly. By early summer (June) the surface commonly warms to roughly 60–70°F (15–21°C), and peak midsummer readings in July and August frequently reach 70–78°F (21–26°C) on sunny days. In autumn the lake cools again, generally falling through the 60s to the 40s °F (about 15–7°C) as air temperatures drop, and in winter the surface reaches freezing (32°F, 0°C) and the lake is typically ice-covered, with deeper waters remaining several degrees warmer than the ice layer due to stratification.
Swimming at Squirrel Lake is generally possible and commonly practiced from public access points, beaches and private shorelines during the warmer months because summer surface temperatures reach comfortable ranges for recreational swimming. However, swimmers should be aware that deeper water remains much colder below the thermocline and that conditions can change quickly with weather; in spring and late fall water is often too cold for prolonged swimming, and winter swimming is unsafe when ice conditions are unstable. Users should follow local rules, posted signs and common-sense safety precautions.
