*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Spofford Lake’s surface water temperatures follow the typical seasonal pattern for a mid- New Hampshire lake. In winter the surface is near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and the lake often freezes over. Spring warming moves surface temps into the mid-40s to mid-60s°F (about 7–18°C) as ice melts and the water column mixes. Peak summer conditions in July and August commonly bring surface temperatures into the 70–80°F range (21–27°C), and on warm, calm days the very surface can reach the low 80s°F (around 28°C). By fall the surface cools again to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C). Deeper water stays colder year-round, so these figures reflect surface temperatures most relevant to swimmers.
Swimming at Spofford Lake is a common recreational activity and is generally allowed in designated areas; public beaches and private shorelines provide access, and local rules or posted advisories govern specific sites. Summer temperatures often make swimming comfortable, while spring and fall waters can feel brisk and require shorter swims or wetsuits. In winter the lake is unsafe for ordinary swimming except for experienced winter swimmers who follow strict ice-safety protocols. As with any natural waterbody, swimmers should heed posted water-quality notices, lifeguard signage, and conditions such as wind, waves or algal advisories before entering.
