** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Somerset Reservoir in north-central Vermont typically shows a wide seasonal swing in surface water temperature. In summer months the surface often warms into the mid-60s to low-70s °F (about 18–23 °C) during warm spells, while late spring and early fall surface temperatures commonly range from the mid-40s to mid-60s °F (roughly 7–18 °C). In winter the reservoir’s surface approaches freezing, around 32–39 °F (0–4 °C), and may ice over; deeper water remains colder year-round. Because it is a relatively deep, forested reservoir, thermal stratification can produce much colder water below the surface, so subsurface temperatures are often several degrees cooler than surface readings even in summer.
Swimming at Somerset Reservoir is generally done at visitors’ own risk rather than as a managed beach operation. There are few if any staffed or developed swimming facilities, and access can be remote; property management, seasonal water-level changes, dam-related hazards and cold-water shock are common reasons for caution. Local rules or seasonal restrictions can apply, so swimmers should heed posted signs, avoid areas near the dam or boat launches, be prepared for cold water, and check with local authorities if uncertain about permitted activities.
