** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Scopan Lake, in northern Maine, tends to run cold compared with more southerly lakes. After ice-out in spring surface temperatures commonly sit between about 35–60°F (2–15°C) as the water slowly warms. In peak summer months the surface often reaches roughly 60–72°F (15–22°C) on warm, sunny days, though deeper water and shadier bays remain considerably colder. By early fall surface readings typically fall back into the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range as air temperatures cool. In winter the lake freezes over and water just under the ice remains near freezing, roughly 32–39°F (0–4°C).
Swimming is possible at Scopan Lake mainly during the warmer summer months when surface temperatures reach the comfortable upper 50s to low 70s Fahrenheit (mid-teens Celsius to low twenties Celsius), but it is largely a seasonal and situational activity. There are no widespread staffed beach facilities or lifeguards, and much of the shoreline is remote or accessed by boat or adjacent campsites, so caution is important. Cold water, sudden temperature stratification, limited visibility, and the risk of hypothermia even on warm days mean swimmers should be conservative, wear flotation when appropriate, and avoid entering when ice is present. Local conditions and signage should guide decisions about when and where to swim.
