** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Schoodic Lake in Maine experiences a strong seasonal cycle in water temperature. During winter the surface sits near freezing, around 32°F (0°C), and the lake commonly freezes over. In spring the water warms slowly, typically ranging from roughly 35–55°F (2–13°C) as meltwater and cool air keep temperatures low. By late spring and early summer surface readings commonly reach about 55–65°F (13–18°C). Peak summer surface temperatures in sheltered shallows and late July–August often climb into the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, roughly 18–24°C, though deeper water remains substantially colder. In autumn the lake cools again to around 50–60°F (10–15°C) before freezing resumes. Like many Maine lakes, Schoodic stratifies in summer so temperatures vary with depth and location.
Swimming at Schoodic Lake is generally permitted and used recreationally in the warmer months because it is a publicly accessible freshwater lake with suitable shoreline for bathing. However, conditions make swimming seasonally limited: cold spring and fall waters and ice cover in winter make swimming impractical and potentially hazardous, and cold deeper water poses a risk of cold shock. Visitors should observe posted advisories, be aware of uneven bottoms and temperature variation, use flotation if needed, and follow local safety guidance.
