Prospect Park Lake in Brooklyn experiences a typical temperate-seasonal pattern in surface water temperature. In winter the lake often approaches freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), and in cold spells thin ice can form though it is not reliably safe. Spring sees a gradual rise, roughly 40–60°F (4–15°C) as air temperatures warm and runoff mixes into the basin. Peak summer temperatures commonly range from about 68–78°F (20–26°C) on warm days; in late July and August surface readings can sometimes edge toward the upper end of that band. During autumn the lake cools again, generally moving through 50–65°F (10–18°C) before winter settles in. These values are approximate and can vary with weather, shading, depth, and storm inflows.
Swimming in Prospect Park Lake is not permitted.
