** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Kensico Reservoir, located in Westchester County, typically shows the seasonal temperature patterns of a temperate, deep drinking-water impoundment. Surface temperatures in winter often hover close to freezing, roughly 33–40°F (1–4°C). In spring the surface warms into the 40–60°F range (4–16°C) as inflows and air temperatures rise. During summer the sun can lift surface readings into the mid-60s to mid-70s Fahrenheit, approximately 65–75°F (18–24°C), though deeper water remains much cooler; below the thermocline lake temperatures commonly stay in the 40–50°F band (4–10°C). In autumn the surface cools again into about 50–60°F (10–16°C) before mixing returns the reservoir to near-winter conditions.
Swimming in Kensico Reservoir is not allowed because it is part of New York City’s municipal water supply and subject to rules designed to protect water quality and public safety. Prohibitions are intended to minimize contamination risks, protect treatment processes, and avoid unsafe conditions such as cold, deep water and underwater currents. While the reservoir’s summer surface temperatures might appear suitable for recreational swimming, regulatory restrictions and the potential for cold, hypothermic conditions at depth mean that approved public swimming takes place at managed pools and designated recreational facilities rather than in the reservoir itself.
