*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The impounded reach commonly called Pool 4 at Redwing Dam along the Mississippi River on the Wisconsin–Minnesota border shows strong seasonal variation in surface temperature. In winter the water sits near freezing, around 32°F (0°C) where ice forms in calmer bays. Spring warming typically yields surface readings from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as snowmelt and cold inflows persist. In summer, on warm, calm days, surface temperatures commonly climb into the mid-60s to high-70s °F (about 18–26°C) and can occasionally reach the low 80s °F (~27–28°C) in heat waves; deeper or faster-flowing channels remain noticeably cooler. Fall brings a steady decline back toward the 45–65°F range (7–18°C) before ice forms again.
Swimming in Pool 4 is not uniformly managed like a beach and therefore depends on location and local rules. Recreational swimming may occur in calmer bays and marked public access sites, but areas close to the dam, locks or main navigation channel are hazardous and often restricted because of strong currents, hydraulics, debris and boat traffic. Water quality can also vary after heavy rain. For safety, use designated swim areas where available, follow posted signs and local guidance, and check recent health advisories before entering the water.
