** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Pelican Lake in Minnesota follows the familiar seasonal pattern of northern lakes. Surface temperatures in late spring typically range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as the water stratifies after ice-out. In midsummer, surface water commonly warms to roughly 68–78°F (20–26°C), with the warmest readings in shallow bays and nearshore areas. By early fall temperatures decline through the 50s°F (10–15°C) as cooling and turnover begin. During winter the lake is usually ice-covered and water just beneath the ice is near freezing, around 32°F (0°C) or a bit above in the 33–39°F (1–4°C) range at depth, depending on conditions.
Swimming is generally permitted at Pelican Lake where public beaches, resorts, or private shorelines provide access, but it is governed by local rules and current conditions. Summer surface temperatures often make recreational swimming comfortable, whereas spring and fall can be uncomfortably cold and increase the risk of cold-water shock. In winter the ice precludes ordinary swimming and presents hazards unless specific, supervised ice-swimming events are held. Water-quality advisories, algal blooms, and lakefront signage can temporarily restrict swimming, so checking local guidance and observing posted warnings is important for safety.
