*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Dead Lake in Minnesota, like many small lakes in the state, experiences strong seasonal swings in water temperature. In winter the surface typically freezes and temperatures near the ice are around 32°F (0°C), while deeper water remains somewhat warmer. As spring warms, surface temperatures climb into roughly the mid-30s to low 60s °F (about 2–16°C) depending on sun and wind. During summer the surface often reaches comfortable swimming levels, commonly in the mid-60s to upper 70s °F (about 18–26°C) on warm afternoons, though shallower bays can warm more and deeper zones stay cooler. In autumn the lake cools again, with surface readings frequently falling into the 40s–60s °F (roughly 4–16°C) as turnover begins.
Swimming is generally possible during the open-water season when the lake is ice-free, but whether people should swim depends on local conditions and posted rules. Many Minnesota lakes allow recreational swimming at public access points or designated beaches, but water quality (including algal blooms), temperature, underwater hazards, boat traffic, and signage can limit safe swimming. Early- and late-season water can feel very cold and increase risk of cold-water shock or hypothermia, and frozen conditions make swimming unsafe except for organized ice activities with proper precautions. Always check local advisories and exercise standard water-safety practices.
