Lake Lizzie, like many lakes in west-central Minnesota, experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in surface water temperature. After ice-out in spring the lake typically ranges from about 35–55°F (2–13°C) as runoff and cool weather dominate. By early to mid-summer surface temperatures commonly climb into the mid-60s to upper 70s Fahrenheit, roughly 18–26°C, with the warmest weeks sometimes pushing toward the high 70s (25–26°C) in sheltered bays. In fall the surface cools again, often falling to the 45–60°F range (7–16°C) as air temperatures drop and mixing increases. During winter Lake Lizzie usually freezes over and surface temperatures are at or just below 32°F (0°C) under ice; liquid water below ice remains near the temperature of maximum density (about 39°F or 4°C) in deeper spots.
Swimming is generally possible on Lake Lizzie during the ice-free months because it is a recreational lake with public access points, but actual use depends on local shore ownership, posted rules and current conditions. Summer offers the safest and most comfortable swimming when surface temperatures are warmest; spring and fall bring cold-water shock risks and shorter exposure tolerance. Algal blooms, aquatic vegetation or occasional water-quality advisories can temporarily limit swimming, and ice cover makes winter swimming unsafe without specialized precautions.
