** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Big Cormorant Lake in Minnesota experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in water temperature. In spring the surface typically warms from around 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and runoff continues. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface temperatures most often in the mid-70s to low 80s °F (about 24–28°C), though shallow bays can warm a few degrees higher on hot, calm days. By early fall the lake cools into the 50s–60s °F range (10–16°C) as air temperatures drop. During winter the surface freezes and water beneath the ice stays close to 32–40°F (0–4°C), making the lake essentially unusable for normal swimming until ice-out in spring.
Swimming is generally allowed on Big Cormorant Lake and is a common recreational activity in the warmer months, especially from late June through August when surface temperatures are most comfortable. Whether swimming is advisable depends on conditions: water quality advisories for algal blooms, excessive vegetation, water clarity, wind and weather, and the absence of lifeguards at most public accesses can affect safety. Ice cover in winter precludes typical swimming; any winter water activities should only be undertaken with proper training, gear and local safety guidance.
