Lake Kiuruvesi, located in North Savo in the town of Kiuruvesi, is a shallow and calm freshwater lake surrounded by forests and open farmland. It is part of the Iisalmi watercourse, which connects several lakes in eastern Finland. Due to its relatively shallow depth, Kiuruvesi warms more quickly in early summer compared to many other Finnish lakes. After the ice melts in late April or early May, the surface temperature is around 5–8 °C (41–46 °F). During early summer, it rises to 14–17 °C (57–63 °F), and in July, the warmest month, the lake usually reaches 19–22 °C (66–72 °F). On particularly hot days, the water in sheltered bays can briefly exceed 23 °C (73 °F). By late September, the temperature cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake freezes again in November.
Swimming in Lake Kiuruvesi is allowed and common among locals during the summer. The water quality is generally good, though slightly brownish due to natural humus from surrounding soils. Public beaches and piers around the town provide safe and easy access to the water.
