*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Nicatous Lake follows a typical Maine inland-lake temperature cycle. In summer the surface commonly warms into the mid-60s to mid-70s °F (about 18–24 °C), with the warmest shallow bays occasionally reaching the upper 70s °F (25–26 °C) on hot spells. Spring and early summer see a rapid rise from near-freezing conditions after ice-out, with surface temperatures in spring often ranging from the mid-30s to low 60s °F (1–17 °C). By autumn the lake cools back through the 50s into the 40s °F (10–5 °C) before freezing. In winter the surface is typically at or just below freezing where ice forms (around 32 °F / 0 °C), while deeper water remains near the density maximum of about 39 °F (4 °C).
Swimming is generally possible on Nicatous Lake during the warmer months because it is a public freshwater lake with shoreline access, but conditions and safety vary. Surface temperatures in July and August can be pleasant for bathing, yet abrupt depth changes and cold water at even moderate depths increase the risk of cold shock and cramps, and most shorelines lack lifeguards or facilities. In spring and fall the water is usually too cold for prolonged swimming, and winter ice makes open-water swimming unsafe except for experienced, prepared ice swimmers. Always check local advisories and take standard water-safety precautions.
