*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Tunk Lake’s water follows the typical seasonal pattern of temperate Maine lakes. Surface temperatures in summer commonly reach about 65–75°F (18–24°C), with the warmest readings in July and August; deeper water remains notably cooler. In spring the lake warms from near-ice conditions to roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C) depending on sunlight and runoff, while fall brings cooling back into the 50–60°F (10–16°C) range before ice forms. Winter temperatures hover at or just above freezing, about 32–34°F (0–1°C) under ice. Thermal stratification in summer can leave the hypolimnion considerably colder, so subsurface temperatures remain low even on warm days.
Swimming at Tunk Lake is generally permitted as a recreational activity where public access and informal beaches exist, because the lake is used for boating, fishing, and day use. That said, local rules, posted signs and any health advisories should be followed; water quality issues such as algal blooms or bacterial advisories can temporarily restrict swimming. Swimmers should also respect seasonal hazards: cold-water shock and hypothermia risks early and late in the season, and unsafe ice conditions in winter. Lifeguards are not always present, so standard precautions—swimming with a companion, wearing a life jacket for boat entry, and checking current conditions—are advisable.
