*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Viva Naughton Reservoir experiences a wide seasonal range of surface water temperatures typical of Wyoming high-country impoundments. In spring (April–May) and fall (September–October) surface temperatures commonly fall between about 40–60°F (4–15°C), while summer months (June–August) are when the water is warmest, often averaging roughly 60–70°F (15–21°C) and sometimes climbing into the low 70s°F (around 22–23°C) on warm, calm afternoons. By late fall and winter the reservoir cools rapidly; surface temperatures approach freezing and frequently sit near 32–39°F (0–4°C) with ice cover possible from late fall through early spring depending on winter severity and local conditions.
Swimming is generally possible and is a common summer activity when surface temperatures are highest, but it is not the same as swimming in lower-elevation, warmer lakes. The water can remain brisk even in midsummer, so swimmers should be prepared for cold shock and a higher risk of hypothermia after prolonged exposure. There are typically no lifeguards or formal supervision, and weather can change quickly, so check local signage and conditions before entering the water. Boat traffic and submerged structures are additional safety considerations for anyone choosing to swim at the reservoir.
