*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Metonga Lake experiences a typical northern Wisconsin seasonal cycle of water temperatures. In spring, as ice melts and the lake mixes, surface temperatures commonly range from about 40–60°F (4–16°C). By summer the surface warms most years into the mid-70s to low 80s°F (24–28°C) on warm, sunny days, though cooler weather or wind can keep temperatures in the 60s°F (15–20°C). In early fall the water usually drops through the 50s–60s°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures cool, and by late fall it approaches near-freezing conditions. During winter the lake is typically ice-covered and water just under the ice sits around 32°F (0°C), so surface swimming is not feasible.
Swimming in Metonga Lake is commonly permitted and practiced during the warmer months because the shoreline is accessible and summertime surface temperatures are comfortable for recreational use. Local conditions such as wind, recent rainfall, or algal blooms can affect water quality and safety, so swimmers should pay attention to posted advisories or guidance from local authorities. Cold spring and fall water can pose hypothermia risk for prolonged exposure, and ice conditions in winter make swimming unsafe except in organized, supervised events with appropriate precautions.
