** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Boom Lake, like many small inland lakes in Wisconsin, experiences pronounced seasonal shifts in water temperature. In spring (April–May) surface temperatures commonly rise from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and the sun warms shallow water. Peak summer temperatures (June–August) often reach about 68–78°F (20–26°C) at the surface on warm, calm days, though shallow bays can be warmer and deeper basins substantially cooler. In early fall (September–October) surface readings typically fall back to the 50–65°F (10–18°C) range as air temperatures drop, and through winter the lake is usually near freezing with surface water at or just above 32°F (0°C) when ice is present. Local factors—such as depth, shading, inflows, and wind—can cause notable variation and produce thermoclines in mid-summer where deeper water is much colder.
Swimming is generally possible in Wisconsin lakes during the ice-free months when surface temperatures are comfortable, and Boom Lake is no exception provided local rules don’t prohibit it. Most public lakes allow swimming, but safety and water quality depend on current conditions: check for posted advisories, watch for aquatic plants, sudden drop-offs and boat traffic, and note that there are often no lifeguards. For a safe swim, choose warmer, sheltered areas, and verify any local restrictions or monitoring results before entering the water.
