McDonald Lake in Michigan typically follows the seasonal pattern of small inland lakes in the region. In spring the surface temperature often climbs from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and air warms. By summer, surface temperatures commonly reach about 68–78°F (20–26°C) on warm afternoons, though shallow bays can get warmer and deeper areas remain several degrees cooler. In fall the surface cools to approximately 45–65°F (7–18°C) as cooler air and storms mix the water, and in winter the lake approaches freezing, with surface temperatures near 32°F (0°C) where ice forms; below the ice the water stays just above freezing.
