*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
McDonald Lake in Michigan typically follows the seasonal pattern of small inland lakes in the region. In spring the surface temperature often climbs from roughly 40–60°F (4–16°C) as ice melts and air warms. By summer, surface temperatures commonly reach about 68–78°F (20–26°C) on warm afternoons, though shallow bays can get warmer and deeper areas remain several degrees cooler. In fall the surface cools to approximately 45–65°F (7–18°C) as cooler air and storms mix the water, and in winter the lake approaches freezing, with surface temperatures near 32°F (0°C) where ice forms; below the ice the water stays just above freezing. Thermal layering can produce colder pockets at depth even in summer, so surface readings don’t always reflect conditions throughout the water column.
Swimming at McDonald Lake is generally allowed as part of typical recreational use of inland Michigan lakes, but it depends on ownership, posted rules, and water-quality conditions. During summer months people commonly swim when surface temperatures are in the upper 60s to mid-70s °F (around 20–24°C), but swimmers should heed local advisories, watch for algae blooms, and be aware of cold-water shock from sudden immersion or windy conditions that cool the surface. In winter the lake is unsafe for swimming unless properly supported by ice-safety measures and local permissions.
