*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Loch Calder is a quiet freshwater lake in Caithness, in the far north of Scotland, surrounded by open farmland and gentle moorland hills. The loch’s exposed northern location and shallow depth mean its water temperature changes more noticeably with the seasons, though it remains cool overall. In winter, temperatures usually stay around 2–4 °C (36–39 °F), rising in spring to about 7–9 °C (45–48 °F). During summer, the water can reach 14–16 °C (57–61 °F) on calm, sunny days, especially near the shore, while deeper areas remain colder. By autumn, the loch gradually cools again toward 8–10 °C (46–50 °F), maintaining a crisp and refreshing feel typical of northern Scottish lakes.
Swimming in Loch Calder is allowed and often enjoyed by wild swimmers during the summer months when the water is at its warmest. The loch’s clear, calm surface makes it suitable for both short dips and longer swims, though wetsuits are recommended for comfort outside midsummer. The area is peaceful and sparsely populated, offering a sense of remoteness ideal for outdoor recreation. Fishing, kayaking, and birdwatching are also popular here. Nearby attractions include the town of Thurso, the Flow Country peatlands, and Dunnet Head, the northernmost point on the British mainland.
