*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Carvins Cove Reservoir (often referred to as Carvin Cove) in southwestern Virginia experiences the same seasonal swings in surface water temperature typical of Appalachian reservoirs. In winter the surface usually cools to roughly 34–45°F (1–7°C), with occasional partial ice formation in colder spells. Spring brings a steady rise into the mid 40s to mid 60s °F (7–18°C) as sun and air temperatures warm the upper layers. Summer surface temperatures commonly reach about 68–82°F (20–28°C) on warm days and can spike a bit higher during heat waves, while autumn sees a gradual fall back into the 50s and low 60s °F (10–17°C). Deeper water remains noticeably cooler year‑round, and local conditions such as wind, shade and inflows cause short‑term variation.
Swimming is not provided for in the reservoir the way it is at a public beach; there are no staffed swim areas or lifeguards and the area is managed primarily for water supply, boating and fishing. Because of safety concerns, lack of designated swim beaches and the reservoir’s role in watershed management, formal swimming is discouraged or prohibited by local authorities; recreational activity is therefore focused on shoreline trails, fishing and permitted boating rather than organized swimming.
