Lake Durusu (Turkish: Durugöl) is a freshwater reservoir north of Istanbul that shows clear seasonal variation in surface temperature. In winter the lake typically cools to around 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), spring brings a gradual rise into the 8–16 °C (46–61 °F) range as the water mixes, and summer surface temperatures commonly reach 18–26 °C (64–79 °F), occasionally peaking close to 28 °C (82 °F) during heat waves. In autumn the surface usually falls back into the 12–18 °C (54–64 °F) band. These are broad, typical ranges that vary with year-to-year weather, wind-driven mixing, and depth; deeper layers remain colder and thermal stratification can limit warming.
Swimming in Durugöl is generally not permitted because the lake functions as an important municipal drinking-water reservoir and is protected for quality and supply reasons. Authorities restrict bathing and other direct-contact activities to prevent contamination, and safety concerns—cold temperatures below the surface, variable currents, and occasional algal conditions in warm months—add to the rationale.
