Water Temperature Trends
Istanbul Province, located on the northwest coast of Turkey, is surrounded by both the Sea of Marmara to the south and the Black Sea to the north. The water temperature in this region can vary significantly depending on the season and the body of water. During the summer months, from June to September, the water in the Sea of Marmara tends to be warmer, with temperatures ranging from 22°C to 26°C (72°F to 79°F), making it quite comfortable for swimming and other water activities. The Black Sea, on the other hand, remains a bit cooler, with temperatures between 18°C and 22°C (64°F to 72°F) in summer.
In the autumn months of October and November, the Sea of Marmara gradually cools down, with temperatures ranging from 18°C to 22°C (64°F to 72°F). This is still suitable for swimming, but the water becomes cooler as the season progresses. The Black Sea, however, remains relatively cooler during the fall, with temperatures between 16°C and 20°C (61°F to 68°F). By the end of November, the temperatures start to drop significantly.
During the winter months, from December to February, the water temperature in both the Sea of Marmara and the Black Sea decreases considerably. In the Sea of Marmara, temperatures drop to around 8°C to 12°C (46°F to 54°F), while the Black Sea sees temperatures between 6°C and 10°C (43°F to 50°F). This makes swimming less appealing for most people. In the spring months of March to May, the temperatures slowly begin to rise again, gradually reaching a more pleasant range, signaling the return of warmer weather and the beach season.
