*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Bonaparte's surface water temperatures follow a typical Upstate New York seasonal pattern. In winter the lake usually freezes or sits right at the freezing point, about 32°F (0°C), and open-water temperatures are generally just above freezing when ice is not present. Spring sees a steady rise, with surface readings commonly in the mid-30s to mid-50s °F (2–13°C) as air temperatures warm and ice melts. By summer, especially July and August, surface temperatures often reach the high 60s to mid-70s °F (20–24°C), and on warm sunny stretches can climb into the upper 70s °F (about 25°C). Fall brings a cooling trend, with late-season surface temperatures dropping from the 60s °F (around 15–18°C) down toward near-freezing again by late November.
Swimming in Lake Bonaparte is generally permitted because it is a recreational freshwater lake used by residents and visitors for boating and bathing, but opportunities depend on access and seasonal conditions. Most swimming is concentrated in the warm summer months when surface temperatures are comfortable; early- and late-season water can be uncomfortably cold and pose risks such as cold shock or hypothermia. In winter the lake is unsafe for swimming due to ice. Shoreline ownership, public access points, and local rules affect where and how people swim, and typical precautions—life jackets, awareness of water quality advisories, and no-swim conditions—should be observed.
