** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Stillwater Reservoir, located in the Adirondacks of northern New York, stays noticeably cooler than many lowland lakes because it is relatively deep, fed by cold streams, and surrounded by forested shorelines. Surface temperatures typically run from near freezing in winter when ice often forms (around 32°F / 0°C) to spring readings in the 34–55°F range (1–13°C) as snowmelt and weather moderate. In midsummer the warmest surface temperatures commonly reach roughly 60–75°F (15–24°C) on sunny, calm days, while autumn sees a steady decline back into the 45–60°F band (7–15°C) as air temperatures fall and turnover begins.
Swimming is commonly practiced at campsites and along accessible shorelines, so in that sense it is allowed, but there are few formal sandy beaches or lifeguarded areas. Because the reservoir is managed for multiple uses (boating, fishing, camping) and because cold, deep water, sudden drop-offs, submerged structure, and boat traffic can create hazards, swimmers should exercise caution, wear a life jacket if appropriate, and heed any posted rules or advisories. In winter the ice makes swimming unsafe except for controlled, well-prepared activities; during summer, short swims are popular but the water remains cooler than many inland recreational lakes.
