*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Butterfield Lake’s surface water follows the seasonal patterns typical of upstate New York. In winter the lake hovers near freezing, around 32°F (0°C) at the surface and often develops ice cover. During spring it warms gradually, commonly ranging from the mid-40s to mid-50s °F (7–13°C) as air temperatures rise. Peak summer temperatures in July and August often reach the low to mid 70s °F (about 21–24°C), and in especially warm summers pockets of the lake can climb into the upper 70s °F (25–26°C). By autumn the surface cools back down to roughly the 50s–60s °F (10–16°C) before returning to freeze in winter.
Swimming is generally possible during the warmer months because surface temperatures in mid-summer are comfortable for bathing, and shorelines are used for recreational swimming. However, access and rules can vary by shoreline ownership and any local advisories; water quality issues such as algae blooms, submerged hazards, or lack of lifeguards can affect safety and may limit where swimming is advisable. In spring and fall the water is often cool enough to make prolonged swims uncomfortable, and winter ice makes swimming unsafe except for specifically sanctioned ice activities with proper precautions. Always check current local guidance and conditions before entering the water.
