** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Almanor’s water temperatures vary markedly through the year because it is a large, high-elevation reservoir. In spring the surface typically runs cool, roughly 45–60°F (7–15°C) as snowmelt and cool air keep the lake chilled. Summer is when the lake is warmest: surface readings commonly rise into the mid-60s to low 70s°F (about 18–24°C) on calm, sunny days, though deeper water stays colder. Early fall usually brings a gradual cooling to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures drop. In winter the lake can be quite cold, often 34–50°F (1–10°C) at the surface in colder spells, and shoreline ice or near-freezing conditions can occur in sustained cold periods.
Swimming at Lake Almanor is generally allowed and practiced at public beaches and park areas because the reservoir is managed for recreation as well as water supply. Access is subject to local rules, posted signs and seasonal park services, and watercraft use can affect where people choose to swim. Visitors should account for cold-water hazards even in summer, since sudden immersion can cause cold-shock or quick loss of body heat, and wear flotation when appropriate. Checking current conditions before entering the water is recommended for safety.
