Location & Local Information
Lake Yli-Kitka, located in North Ostrobothnia near Kuusamo, is one of Finland’s cleanest and most beautiful northern lakes. It is part of the Kitka–Oulanka watershed and lies at a relatively high elevation, surrounded by pristine forests and rocky shores. Because of its northern location and considerable depth, the water in Yli-Kitka remains cool throughout most of the year. In spring, after the ice melts in late May, the surface temperature is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, it usually reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). In shallow, sunny bays, the temperature can briefly climb to around 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake freezes again in November.
Swimming in Lake Yli-Kitka is allowed and popular during the short northern summer. The water is exceptionally clear and pure, offering a refreshing and natural swimming experience. Locals and visitors often swim near small sandy beaches or piers, especially on calm and sunny days. Even though the water stays cool, it is ideal for those who enjoy peaceful, invigorating swims surrounded by Finland’s untouched wilderness.
