Location & Local Information
Lake Yli-Kitka, located in North Ostrobothnia near Kuusamo, is one of Finland’s cleanest and most beautiful northern lakes. It is part of the Kitka–Oulanka watershed and lies at a relatively high elevation, surrounded by pristine forests and rocky shores. Because of its northern location and considerable depth, the water in Yli-Kitka remains cool throughout most of the year. In spring, after the ice melts in late May, the surface temperature is about 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest month, it usually reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). In shallow, sunny bays, the temperature can briefly climb to around 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By late September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake freezes again in November.
Swimming in Lake Yli-Kitka is allowed and popular during the short northern summer. The water is exceptionally clear and pure, offering a refreshing and natural swimming experience. Locals and visitors often swim near small sandy beaches or piers, especially on calm and sunny days.
