Lake Ala-Kitka, located in North Ostrobothnia near Kuusamo, is a clear and cold freshwater lake surrounded by forests and ridges typical of the Koillismaa region. Together with the nearby Yli-Kitka, it forms one of the cleanest lake systems in Finland. Due to its northern location and relatively high altitude, the water temperature in Ala-Kitka remains cool throughout most of the year. In spring, after the ice melts in late May, the surface water temperature is around 4–7 °C (39–45 °F). During early summer, it rises to 13–16 °C (55–61 °F), and in July, the warmest period, it usually reaches 17–20 °C (63–68 °F). On hot days, shallow shores can briefly reach 21–22 °C (70–72 °F). By September, the water cools below 10 °C (50 °F), and the lake typically freezes again in November.
Swimming in Lake Ala-Kitka is allowed and common during the short northern summer. The water is exceptionally clear and pure, offering a refreshing and natural swimming experience. Locals and visitors enjoy swimming from small beaches and piers, especially on sunny and calm days. While the water remains cool even in midsummer, it provides a clean, invigorating environment that reflects the pristine beauty of Finland’s northern lakes.
