** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
High Rock Lake, a large reservoir on the Yadkin River in central North Carolina, experiences noticeable seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In winter the lake commonly cools to roughly 35–50°F (2–10°C). Spring warming typically brings temperatures into the 50–70°F (10–21°C) range as air temperatures rise and spring runoff mixes. Peak summer surface values often fall between about 72–86°F (22–30°C), with shallower bays sometimes running a bit warmer on hot, calm days. In autumn the water cools again into the mid 50s to mid 70s°F (13–24°C), making late summer and early fall the most comfortable periods for extended swims.
Swimming on High Rock Lake is allowed in many areas because it is a public reservoir, but there is no comprehensive managed beach system and conditions vary by spot, so swimmers must use caution. Popular public access points and parks permit swimming, but the lake’s heavy boat traffic, variable water levels, submerged structure, lack of lifeguards, and occasional water-quality advisories or algae blooms make designated, well-monitored spots the safer choice. For safety, choose supervised or clearly accepted swimming areas, watch for boats, and check local advisories about water quality and conditions before entering.
