** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lookout Shoals Lake, a reservoir in North Carolina’s Piedmont, experiences typical seasonal surface temperature swings influenced by air temperature, depth and inflows. In winter, surface temperatures commonly range from about 35–50°F (2–10°C). Spring sees a steady rise, roughly 50–70°F (10–21°C) as the lake mixes and warms. Peak summer conditions often bring surface readings in the neighborhood of 70–85°F (21–29°C), while fall cooling generally produces temperatures around 55–75°F (13–24°C). These figures describe surface conditions; deeper water remains cooler year-round and sudden weather changes can alter temperatures rapidly.
Swimming at Lookout Shoals is possible but is largely seasonal and situational. Most recreational use occurs from late spring through early fall when surface temperatures are more comfortable; winter and early spring waters are cold enough to increase hypothermia risk. Some areas adjacent to marinas, boat launches and private shorelines are commonly used for swimming, but there can be restrictions near dams, intake structures or other infrastructure, and lifeguards are generally not provided. Water quality and algal conditions can vary, so swimmers should heed posted advisories and local guidance and treat swimming as an activity done at one’s own risk.
