*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Townsend, a reservoir in the North Carolina Piedmont, experiences typical seasonal surface temperatures for the region. In winter the water commonly cools to roughly 40–55°F (4–13°C). Spring brings a steady warming, with surface temperatures often in the 50–70°F (10–21°C) range as air temperatures rise and stratification breaks down. Summer is when the lake is warmest, with surface readings frequently between about 70–85°F (21–29°C) and occasional warm spikes on prolonged hot days. In autumn the lake cools again, typically sitting in the 55–75°F (13–24°C) band as the surface loses heat and mixing increases. Deeper water remains substantially colder year-round because of thermal stratification, so temperature can change quickly with depth or after storms.
Swimming in Lake Townsend is not permitted as a regular recreational activity. The lake functions as part of the municipal water system and local ordinances and signage prohibit swimming for reasons of water quality protection, public safety, and reservoir management; lifeguards and beach facilities are not provided. Additionally, the combination of colder deep water, fluctuating currents around inflows and outflows, and uneven shoreline can create hazardous conditions for unsupervised swimmers. Visitors can still enjoy boating, fishing, and shoreline trails where allowed, but swimming is restricted to protect both people and the water supply.
