** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Higgins, a small municipal lake in North Carolina, follows the typical seasonal temperature pattern of Piedmont reservoirs. In winter months water temperatures commonly range from about 38–50°F (3–10°C). Spring brings steady warming, with surface readings often between 50–68°F (10–20°C) as air temperatures rise. Peak summer temperatures are usually reached from July into August, when surface waters typically sit around 70–82°F (21–28°C) depending on weather and depth. In autumn the lake cools again, with temperatures commonly falling into the 55–70°F (13–21°C) band as the season progresses. Local conditions such as recent rainfall, depth, and wind mixing can shift these numbers by a few degrees and deeper layers remain cooler year‑round.
Swimming at Lake Higgins is not generally provided as a designated activity in the way you would find at staffed public beaches. The lake is managed primarily for passive recreation—walking, fishing and wildlife viewing—and it lacks marked swimming beaches and lifeguards, which is why official swimming areas are uncommon or discouraged. Water quality issues, submerged hazards, and variable temperatures can also make unmonitored swimming a safety and health concern. In warm summer weather some people may choose to wade or swim informally, but doing so is typically at one’s own risk and contrary to the lake’s intended uses.
