** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Tillery’s surface water temperatures follow a clear seasonal pattern typical of a central North Carolina reservoir. In spring (roughly March–May) the lake usually warms from about 50–68°F (10–20°C) as air temperatures rise. Summer surface readings commonly reach about 72–86°F (22–30°C), with the warmest conditions in July and August, while autumn sees a gradual cooling to roughly 60–72°F (16–22°C). In winter the surface often drops into the 35–50°F range (2–10°C). These are surface values; deeper water remains significantly colder year-round and the reservoir can develop a thermocline in summer. Localized cold currents near the hydroelectric dam and water-release structures can also make conditions chillier and more hazardous than shoreline temperatures suggest.
Swimming in and around Lake Tillery is carried out by visitors but is subject to practical and safety considerations rather than extensive lifeguarded public beaches. Many access points and private properties allow people to enter the water, but there are restrictions and warnings near the dam, intake structures and heavy boat traffic where swimming is unsafe or prohibited. Authorities and locals advise caution because of changing temperatures, sudden drop-offs, submerged obstacles, strong currents near the powerhouse, and the absence of monitored swimming areas; checking posted rules at access sites and exercising vigilance helps reduce risk.
