** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Hensley Lake, a reservoir in California’s Central Valley, experiences noticeable seasonal swings in surface water temperature. In summer months surface temperatures commonly run about 70–85°F (21–29°C), making the upper layer fairly comfortable for short swims. During spring and fall the lake typically cools to roughly 55–70°F (13–21°C), while winter surface temperatures often fall to around 45–55°F (7–13°C). Deeper water remains cooler year-round, so swimmers moving off the warm surface layer can encounter much lower temperatures. Weather, inflows, and lake elevation all influence these ranges from year to year.
Swimming is generally allowed at Hensley Lake because it is managed as a multi‑use recreation reservoir that permits water contact activities. That said, there are practical restrictions and safety considerations: lifeguards are not usually provided at all access points, boat traffic and wakes can create hazards, water levels and shoreline conditions change seasonally, and occasional water‑quality advisories or closures may be issued. Cold‑water shock is a real risk in cooler months, so swimmers should be cautious, wear flotation when appropriate, and check local conditions before entering the water.
