Courtright Reservoir sits at high elevation and is fed largely by snowmelt, so water temperatures stay relatively cold throughout the year. In late spring, as snowpack is melting, surface temperatures commonly range from about 33–45°F (0.5–7°C). By mid to late summer the warmest surface readings may reach roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) on calm, sunny days, though deeper water remains much colder. In early fall temperatures typically fall back to about 40–55°F (4–13°C) as cooling and inflow increase. In winter the reservoir can approach freezing conditions, often forming ice at the edges, with surface temperatures near 32–35°F (0–2°C) when ice is present.
Swimming is not formally prohibited in many forest reservoirs, but at Courtright it is limited in practice by environmental and safety factors. The cold temperatures, sudden wind and weather changes, remote location, lack of lifeguards, and the hazard of cold-water shock and rapid onset hypothermia make unaccompanied or prolonged swims risky.
