** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Cherry Lake in the Sierra foothills of California typically has cool water that changes notably with the seasons. Surface temperatures in spring often range from about 45–60°F (7–16°C) as snowmelt and cooler weather dominate. In summer, surface readings commonly rise to roughly 60–75°F (16–24°C) on warm afternoons, although evenings and cloudy stretches can lower that. By fall the surface usually cools to near 50–65°F (10–18°C), and winter surface temperatures commonly sit around 40–50°F (4–10°C). Deeper water remains substantially colder year‑round, so these are surface values and can vary with air temperature, recent precipitation, and reservoir releases.
Swimming at Cherry Lake is generally allowed in day‑use and shoreline areas, but conditions and rules can change so swimmers should follow posted signage. Recreational swimming is practical in summer when surface temperatures are highest, but swimmers face hazards including cold water shock from sudden immersion, steep drop‑offs, underwater obstacles, boat traffic near marinas, and limited lifeguard coverage. Because of these risks and occasional water‑management restrictions, visitors are advised to swim close to shore, wear a life jacket if venturing farther out, and check current local advisories before entering the water.
