** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Hayward Lake, near Hayward in northern Wisconsin, follows the seasonal pattern typical of small boreal-region lakes. In spring as ice breaks up surface temperatures often range from about 45–60°F (7–16°C). By early summer (June) the lake commonly warms to roughly 60–70°F (16–21°C), with peak summer highs in July and August frequently between 70–80°F (21–27°C) and occasionally touching the low 80s°F (27–29°C) in shallow bays on very warm years. During September and early October temperatures usually fall back to about 55–70°F (13–21°C), dropping below 50°F (10°C) by late fall before lakes freeze and winter surface temperatures reach near 32°F (0°C) under ice.
Swimming in Hayward Lake is generally possible during the ice-free months and is commonly practiced from public beaches and private shorelines when water temperatures are comfortable and conditions are safe. Local rules, posted advisories and water-quality reports determine whether specific sites are open; swimming may be discouraged during harmful algal blooms, heavy runoff events, or when lifeguard services are absent. Winter swimming is restricted by ice cover unless done safely with appropriate precautions and experience. Visitors should always heed local signage and recent water-quality or safety notices before entering the water.
