*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake of the Minong Flowage, like many flowages and inland lakes in northern Wisconsin, experiences a strong seasonal cycle in surface water temperature. In spring (April–June) surface readings commonly rise from near freezing after ice-out toward about 45–65°F (7–18°C) as the sun and air warm the upper water column. By midsummer (July–August) surface temperatures typically peak around 68–78°F (20–26°C), though shallow bays and very warm summers can push temperatures a few degrees higher. A cool thermocline and deeper water often remain much colder, so bottom temperatures may stay in the 40s–50s °F (4–12°C) even in summer. In autumn the surface cools again to roughly 50–65°F (10–18°C) before ice forms; winter brings ice cover and near-freezing conditions around 32°F (0°C).
Swimming in the Minong Flowage area is generally permitted and is a common summer activity where public access or shorefront allows, because summertime surface temperatures are typically comfortable for recreation. However, swimmers should be mindful of seasonal hazards: cold water in early summer and deep areas can cause cold-shock, water quality advisories occasionally limit contact, and ice cover makes swimming unsafe in winter. Local signage, current conditions, and basic precautions such as not swimming alone and avoiding boat traffic improve safety.
