*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Lake Owen’s water temperatures follow the seasonal pattern typical of northern Wisconsin lakes. In spring the surface is brisk, often around 40–55°F (4–13°C) as snowmelt and cool air persist. By summer, surface water commonly warms to roughly 68–80°F (20–27°C), with the warmest readings on sunny, calm afternoons; deeper water remains much cooler. During fall the lake cools again to approximately 50–65°F (10–18°C) as air temperatures drop and mixing increases. In winter the surface usually freezes; water just under the ice is near 32–39°F (0–4°C), while the coldest layers stabilize close to about 39°F (4°C) in deeper parts due to water’s density properties.
Swimming on Lake Owen is generally permitted and is a common recreational activity in the warmer months because the lake is accessible and supports boating and shoreline use. Most people swim when surface temperatures reach the comfortable summer range of about 70–80°F (21–27°C). Cautions apply: water in spring and late fall can be dangerously cold and increase risk of cold-shock or hypothermia, there may be no lifeguards at informal sites, and local water-quality advisories or posted regulations should be heeded. Ice swimming in winter is a specialized activity and requires proper safety measures and local guidance.
