The Embalse de Manzanares, a reservoir northwest of Madrid, has water temperatures that vary considerably through the year. In winter the surface typically falls to about 4–8 °C (39–46 °F), making the water very cold. Spring sees a gradual rise to roughly 8–15 °C (46–59 °F) as air temperatures warm. In the warmest months the reservoir can reach around 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) at the surface on sunny, calm days, though deeper or shaded areas remain cooler. During autumn temperatures usually drop again to the order of 10–16 °C (50–61 °F). These values are approximate and depend on recent weather, wind, depth and inflows, so actual conditions may vary from day to day.
Swimming at the Embalse de Manzanares is generally not permitted or is strongly discouraged by authorities because the reservoir functions as part of a managed water supply and to protect water quality, and because of safety concerns such as sudden depth changes, submerged hazards, currents from inflows and a lack of lifeguard services.
