** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
The Embalse de El Atazar, north of Madrid, is a relatively deep mountain reservoir whose surface temperatures vary markedly through the year. In summer the surface can warm to roughly 18–24 °C (64–75 °F) on warm sunny days, but cooler conditions and depth mean much of the water remains colder. In spring and autumn surface temperatures typically range from about 8–16 °C (46–61 °F), while in winter the reservoir can fall to roughly 4–8 °C (39–46 °F) and occasionally lower during cold snaps. Temperature declines quickly with depth, so thermoclines and cold bottom layers are common even when the surface feels mild. Wind, inflows and seasonal turnover also influence short-term fluctuations.
Swimming at the Embalse de El Atazar is generally not permitted because it is an important source of drinking water and is managed to protect water quality and safety. Authorities restrict bathing and recreational swimming to reduce contamination risks and to avoid accidents related to cold water, hidden currents, boat traffic and sudden depth changes. For those seeking water contact, local regulations and designated recreational areas outside the reservoir should be consulted, and the cold, changeable temperatures should be respected even in summer to prevent hypothermia or cold-water shock.
