** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Cowanesque Lake is a man-made reservoir in northern Pennsylvania whose surface temperatures follow the seasonal cycle common to inland lakes in the region. In winter the water typically hovers near freezing, roughly 32–40°F (0–4°C), often forming ice in shallower bays. Spring warming brings temperatures into the 40–60°F range (4–15°C) as the lake mixes and runoff cools surface layers. By summer the warmest surface readings usually fall between about 65–78°F (18–26°C), with late summer occasionally pushing slightly higher in shallow, sheltered embayments. Temperatures decline again in autumn to roughly 45–65°F (7–18°C) as air cooling and turnover reduce surface warmth. Deeper water remains noticeably colder year-round, so thermal stratification and sudden cold layers can be a hazard.
Swimming status at Cowanesque Lake is influenced by management and safety considerations rather than temperature alone. The lake is managed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and does not offer extensive lifeguarded beaches; as a result swimming is generally either allowed only in designated areas or done at visitors’ own risk, and local rules or posted signs should be followed. Restrictions and discouragements stem from safety issues—cold-water shock, submerged hazards, variable depths, and boat traffic—so anyone choosing to swim should be aware of conditions, wear a life jacket if appropriate, and heed on-site guidance.
