** Average - Average water temperature on this day in recent years
*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Bde Maka Ska, a large urban lake in Minneapolis, experiences a wide annual range of surface temperatures. In spring the water typically runs from about 40–60°F (4–16°C) as it thaws and gradually warms; by late spring and early summer readings often rise into the 60s–70s°F (15–24°C). Peak summer surface temperatures commonly sit around 70–80°F (21–27°C), and on warm, still days can climb into the low 80s°F (27–28°C). In autumn the water cools back through the 60s down to 40–55°F (15–13°C) as the season progresses. In winter the lake usually freezes and subsurface temperatures hover at or just above freezing, roughly 32–34°F (0–1°C) under ice.
Swimming at Bde Maka Ska is permitted at the designated public beach areas and is supported by seasonal lifeguards and routine water-quality monitoring, so people commonly swim there in summer when temperatures are comfortable and advisories are not in effect. However, authorities may close or advise against swimming because of elevated bacteria after heavy rains, or during harmful algal blooms. Cold water and ice present serious risks outside the warm season: cold-shock, hypothermia and unstable ice make off-season swimming hazardous, and winter or ice swimming should only be attempted with proper experience and safety measures.
