*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Barren River Lake in south-central Kentucky experiences a typical temperate reservoir cycle in water temperature. In winter the surface usually cools to roughly the mid-30s to low 50s °F (2–10 °C). Spring sees a steady rise, often ranging from the low 50s to the upper 60s °F (10–20 °C) as the lake warms. Summer brings the warmest conditions, with surface temperatures commonly in the mid-70s to mid-80s °F (24–29 °C) and occasionally climbing toward 86 °F (30 °C) during heat waves. In autumn the surface cools again, typically falling back through the 60s into the 50s °F (15–10 °C). Like many reservoirs, Barren River Lake stratifies in summer so deeper water remains substantially cooler than the surface, and sudden changes in temperature can occur when moving between shallow and deep areas.
Swimming at Barren River Lake is allowed in recreational, designated areas managed by the state park and other public access points, because the lake is maintained for multiuse recreation including bathing. Visitors should heed posted rules, be aware that lifeguards may not be on duty at all sites, and keep in mind hazards such as boat traffic, submerged structures, and cold-water shock from deeper or spring-fed pockets. Seasonal water temperatures make late spring through early fall the most comfortable period for swimming, while colder months carry higher risk of hypothermia. Always check local advisories and signage before entering the water.
