Water Temperature: Daily Trends, Historical Records, and Forecast
❌ As of today, the minimum water temperature ranges from 47°F (8°C) to 50°F (10°C). This is still cool water, suitable only for experienced swimmers or those accustomed to cold water. Swimming in such conditions is possible, but not recommended for prolonged periods. Extra caution should be taken during extended exposure, as the cold water can cause heat loss and lead to hypothermia. For added comfort, special clothing can be used. It is important to note that these swimming tips and recommendations apply only in good weather. When the air temperature is below 68°F (20°C), and sometimes even below 77°F (25°C), swimming can be unpleasant even with relatively high water temperatures.

*** Forecast - Our water temperature forecast
Actual nearshore water temperatures may fluctuate by several degrees from the reported values, especially following heavy rainfall or extended periods of strong winds. Certain wind patterns can cause colder, deeper waters to rise and replace the sun-warmed surface water, leading to noticeable variations.
Our forecast is based on a proprietary mathematical model that considers real-time water temperature changes, historical trends, key weather patterns, wind strength and direction, and air temperature specific to each region. Additionally, we incorporate data from other resorts to enhance accuracy.

Location & Local Information
Åresjön, located by the resort of Åre in Jämtland County, is a mountain lake whose water temperature varies strongly with the seasons. In spring the surface is typically cold as the ice thaws, around 0–10 °C (32–50 °F), and early summer sees gradual warming to roughly 10–18 °C (50–64 °F). Midsummer can bring the warmest surface readings, often in the 15–22 °C (59–72 °F) range on sunny, calm days, while autumn cools the lake back to about 5–10 °C (41–50 °F). During winter the lake commonly freezes and temperatures are at or below 0 °C (32 °F) under ice cover, making normal swimming impractical.
Swimming in Åresjön is generally allowed and is a common summertime activity, thanks to Sweden’s public right of access and the lake’s recreational use. However, conditions dictate whether it is advisable: cold water even in summer can cause cold shock and reduce endurance, there are no guaranteed lifeguards at informal spots, and winter ice cover makes open-water swimming hazardous except for experienced ice bathers using proper safety measures. Visitors should check local conditions, water clarity and temperature, and follow safety guidance before entering the lake.
