The lake Femunden (Norwegian name: Femunden) is a large, upland lake and its water remains relatively cold year-round due to elevation and northern climate. In spring, as ice breaks up, surface temperatures typically range from about 0 to 6 °C (32 to 43 °F). During the high summer months the warmest surface readings are usually between 10 and 16 °C (50 to 61 °F), and in sheltered bays on warm, calm days temperatures can occasionally approach 18 °C (64 °F). In autumn the water cools again to roughly 4 to 8 °C (39 to 46 °F), while winter brings ice cover and surface water at or around 0 °C (32 °F), with deeper water nearer to 4 °C (39 °F) where density effects stabilize temperatures.
Swimming in Femunden is permitted and commonly practiced in summer, but conditions are distinctly cool compared with more southern lakes. The combination of low temperatures, sudden weather changes and the lake’s remote locations means that swims are generally brief unless a wetsuit is used; visitors should take standard safety precautions, enter slowly to avoid cold shock, and be aware there are few lifeguarded areas. Ice swimming or winter bathing is possible where ice conditions are safe, but it requires specialist experience and equipment.
